“Luther and the Schmalkaldic League”:
Guided tour of the historical old quarter with its medieval town architecture, half-timbered buildings and stone bowers from the 14th—18th centuries, then on to the town hall, birthplace and meeting place of the Schmalkaldic League, with its busts of Luther and coats of arms of the members of the League, Luther’s house, Rosenapotheke, 16th century apothecary’s shop, the Hessenhof and the grounds of Wilhelmsburg Castle

“Encounter with the Lutheran movement”:
Guided tour round the town church of St. George where Martin Luther preached in 1537, with small church museum in the Luther Room; ascent of the tower and visit to the Türmerstube

“Dawn of a New Era—Renaissance and Reformation”:
Guided tour through the magnificent banqueting halls of Wilhelmsburg Castle with their original wall paintings and stucco work, and the permanent exhibition on Schmalkalden and Europe in the 16th century, the Reformation, the Schmalkaldic League, and court life and culture at the time of the Hessian landgraves. Then on to the palace church, one of the oldest Prediger churches with altar, magnificent pulpit and wooden pipe organ; organ demonstration on request

Full-length talk: Schmalkalden and Europe in the 16th century—The Age of Reformation and special short talks as part of the Muse in the Museum series, plus age-appropriate programme modules for schoolchildren and students in Wilhelmsburg Castle.
MUSICAL EVENTS
International concert series with the Renaissance organ —May to September—Organ with 252 wooden pipes and 6 registers built in 1590—of the oldest instruments of its kind in Europe which can still be played today. Unmistakable sound in the unique ambience of the Protestant castle church.

Organ concert recitals—Stroll through the historical old quarter and enjoy an organ recital at the castle church and the St. George town church
Trumpets in St. George’s Tower—Hymns and the sounds of brass instruments ring out on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month from May to October
DESTINATIONS
Martin-Luther Trail, 17 km: Walk from Schmalkalden following the route taken by the great reformer in 1537, to Tambach-Dietharz, crossing the famous Rennsteig trail on the way

Services on Sunday and on public holidays in the town church of St. George, 10am

Meditation and organ music from May to September, every Saturday at 5.00pm, in the castle church
